Mirinja Valley:
A Journey I Still Feel

Some journeys end when we return home. Others keep travelling with us—in the photos we revisit, the quiet moments we remember, and the feeling that the world is much bigger than our everyday worries.

THE ENGLISH STORY

Where is Mirinja Valley?

Mirinja Valley is a hilltop tourist destination in Lama Upazila of Bandarban District, in southeastern Bangladesh. The Mirinja Tourist Spot lies along the Lama–Alikadam road, in the green hill country not far from the Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar travel corridor. It is known for its elevated viewpoints, rolling forested ridges, winding river valleys and broad horizons. The Bandarban district tourism authority describes Mirinja Tourist Spot as roughly 1,500 feet above sea level. Source: Bandarban Hill District Council.

The place became an established tourist attraction in the early 2000s. A report in The Daily Star notes that the Mirinja Tourist Complex was established on 17 September 2003; however, a definitive, well-documented explanation of the name “Mirinja” is not readily available, so I would rather not invent an origin story. My December 2024 visit

December 2024 gave me a memory I still like to return to: Mirinja Valley. I can look at these photographs even now and almost feel myself back there—the open sky above me, layers of green hills stretching into the distance, and a river quietly winding through the valley as if it had nowhere urgent to be. The weather during my visit felt cool and wintry, while the sunlight warmed the landscape. That contrast—the fresh air, the warmth on the hills and the wide-open view—made the whole setting feel especially soothing to me.

Life often moves at a pace we don't choose. Work, plans, responsibilities and the little things waiting for our attention can fill every corner of the day. A trip like this gives the mind a little room to breathe. For a while, the only thing asking for my attention was the view in front of me.

“Sometimes, the best thing a journey gives you is not a new place—but a quieter version of yourself.”

A river that never seemed to hurry

What stays with me most is the shape of the river. From the viewpoint, it curved between the hills, disappearing for a moment and appearing again farther away. The hills looked endless, each ridge softer and bluer than the one before it. I remember thinking how easy it is to get caught up in the small things when there is so much beauty beyond our usual routines.

There is something grounding about standing in a place like that. You do not have to solve everything right then. You can just look, breathe, smile at the camera—or put the camera down and let the moment belong to you.

The little details became part of the memory

Beyond the grand view, I remember the sun on the hillside, the earthy path beneath my feet, the simple bamboo structures and thatched roof, and the way the place felt connected to its surroundings. Travel is often remembered through small details like these. A photo may capture the view, but the memory also carries the warmth, the breeze, the pause between conversations, and the happiness of being somewhere different.

What I brought home

I came home with photographs, of course. But the better souvenir was the reminder that rest is not wasted time, curiosity deserves space, and sometimes a change of scenery helps us return to ordinary life with a little more gratitude. I do not need every trip to be grand or perfectly planned. Sometimes a day of green hills, a winding river and a few honest smiles is more than enough.

These photographs are from December 2024, but the feeling still belongs to me today. That is the lovely thing about keeping a travel diary: a place can remain in the past while the joy of remembering it stays present.

If you have been waiting for the “right time” to take a small break, let this be your gentle reminder to make room for it when you can. You do not always need to go far to come back feeling refreshed.
